Thank you for trusting me and let me plan this debate. Because the rapid development of metro system has created both opportunities and problems, I decided to entitle this debate “Are More Metro Lines Needed?”

The debate will be a win-or-lose one in which one side of debaters supports the construction of more metro lines and the other side opposes it. I will rent a venue on Sunday morning and it will suit 50 people including the debaters, the judges and the audience. To start the debate, I will present the background of this debate. This column chart gives a clear overview on the choices of graduates in a certain college in 2013 and 2018. In 2013, 68.1 percent of the graduates sought employment after finishing education but this percentage has dropped noticeably to 60.7% in 2018. Contrary to this decline, only 26.3 percent of the graduates opted for continued education in 2013 but there were 34% in 2018. Another change is the doubled percentage of “entrepreneurial” students who determined to start a business, though the percentage remained low.

These changes originates from the following reasons. First of all, job market continues to approach the point of saturation, which somehow pushes students to acquire a more desired and higher degree to make them more competitive in job hunting. Another possible reason that drives undergraduates keen on postgraduate degrees is their uncertainty about their future. In fact, an increasing number of students haven’t even decided what to do after graduation. They think they might as well spend more years at school studying before figuring it out.

Bringing my analyses to a conclusion, I consider the changes both positive and worrying. Students’ sense of crisis and competitiveness should be encouraged but escaping from reality is not the right way to face challenges. I suggest college graduates listen to diverse advice to find out what the best option is to them, so that they can better exert their potentials.
